What is Sanctuary?

The Sanctuary — Hills Women’s Shelter officially opened its doors on April 20, 2016. The large renovated home has been donated by QIC, the owners of Castle Towers, rent free for three years.

The Sanctuary provides crisis accommodation for up to six woman and their children who are homeless or fleeing domestic violence, for up to 3 months. The Sanctuary is proud to be one of the only services that cater to women and their children with a disability. Thanks to The Sanctuary, up to 30 woman and their children will be provided with around the clock car, specialist support and case management to assist them in starting a new life per year.  The Sanctuary is grateful for our extraordinary partnership with Castle Towers Shopping Centre who have provided a fully renovated home for the Sanctuary to use rent free for three years.  The Sanctuary is underwritten and supported by Women’s Community Shelters who generously fund 50% of the operational costs through fundraising.  The Sanctuary board is comprised entirely of community leaders acting in a voluntary capacity.

5 numbers you should know:

1. $400,000 in funding is required to run The Sanctuary for an entire year
2. $8000 gives one woman and her children shelter, safety and support for 3 months
3. $5000 keeps The Sanctuary’s vehicle registered, insured and fuelled for a year
4. $1000 provides a phone, a tablet and internet access to ensure a woman could access housing and
     employment opportunities
5. $800 supports a family entirely for a week

The six bedrooms, five bathrooms, two kitchens and two lounge areas means the refuge, set up by a community committee with backing from Women’s Community Shelters, will be able to house six women and up to 18 children fleeing violence in the home. Families can be accommodated for up to three months, during that time they will have access counselling, job support, and legal and financial advice. The Sanctuary will also employ a full time children’s caseworker.
